According a report in the Daily Telegraph, the government is warning of a high likelihood of a major heat wave in the UK in 2012. This warning was triggered after an in-depth consultation with climate change scientists.
They warn that a heat wave of the magnitude they are predicting could cause as many as 10,000 deaths. Based on their findings, they also anticipate that temperatures in the UK to rise as much as 3 by the end of the century.
The authors also go on to say that the UK has become much more prepared to deal with these sudden heat waves since the heat wave of 1976, which caused 14,000 premature deaths.
The elderly are the main victims of these types of events and finding new ways to assist in keeping the population cool is a paramount concern, especially in hospitals and nursing homes.
